Data analysis is the function of turning lines and lines of data into meaningful insights and observations that management can use to make strategic decisions.

More formally, analysis of data is a process of inspecting, cleaning, transforming and modeling data with the goal of discovering useful information, suggesting conclusions and supporting decision-making.

Data analyst are needed in almost every functional area (marketing, finance, information systems or operations to name a few) and in every industry.  Data analyst can use a variety of tools for analysis from Excel to more advanced programs like R or Stata.

Those seeking a career that incorporates data analysis, can find both entry-level positions as well as more senior positions with salary ranges to match each career entry point.   Equally as valuable, are the opportunities for advancement for those having a knack for analysis.  Those going into this field should enjoy working with numbers and math.
